Early Spring Migration Update
Connecticut Fishing Report: Early Season Striped Bass & Spring Migration Update
Striped bass are beginning to arrive in Connecticut waters as the annual spring migration pushes north. While the bite has been sporadic, anglers are reporting schoolie bass up to 30 inches, many still carrying sea lice — a clear sign of fresh ocean-run fish.
The Connecticut River and surrounding back bays have been the most productive areas so far. Water temperatures remain cold, which is slowing the consistency of the bite, but a stretch of warmer, sunnier days should help trigger increased striped bass activity.
Bait presence is improving, with strong herring runs and promising baitfish marks being reported throughout the region. This is a key indicator that larger striped bass are not far behind. Additionally, squid are expected to arrive soon, with early reports already coming out of the Newport, Rhode Island area.
Although it’s still early in the season, now is the perfect time to get on the water. A quick boat or kayak shakedown, or even scouting your favorite Connecticut surfcasting spots, could reward you with your first striped bass of the season and build anticipation for the peak spring run.
