The most effective approach is to watch feeding fish and identify the direction and pattern they are moving. Rather than chasing breaking fish from spot to spot, get ahead of their path, position the boat quietly, and let the school come to you. This creates better casting opportunities and is less likely to push the fish down or change their direction.

Casting jigs, epoxy jigs, small soft plastics, and other compact baitfish imitations are excellent choices. Matching the size and profile of the bait they are feeding on is often more important than matching the exact color.

Light spinning tackle is ideal, with a rod and reel capable of making long casts and handling fast, powerful runs. Braided line provides casting distance and sensitivity, while a long fluorocarbon leader offers a less visible connection to the lure in clear water.

Look for diving birds, nervous bait, surface splashes, and schools of baitfish being pushed toward the surface. Albies and bonito can move quickly, so watching where multiple feeds occur can help reveal the direction the school is traveling.

A fast, steady retrieve is a reliable starting point because both species are capable of chasing bait at high speeds. Keep the lure moving through the feeding zone, and experiment with retrieve speed or brief pauses when fish are following without committing.
